International in scope and possessing one of the most diverse and comprehensive collections of design works in existence, the museum's rich holdings range from the Han Dynasty (200 B.C.) to the present day and total more than 200,000 objects. This exhibition features recent acquisitions to all four of the museum's collecting departments: Product Design and Decorative Arts; Drawings, Prints and Graphic Design; Textiles; and Wallcoverings.
New: House Proud: Nineteenth-Century Watercolor Interiors from the Thaw Collection
Upcoming: August 12, 2008 - January 25, 2009
This exhibition showcases the Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw's collection of 19th-century watercolor drawings that meticulously detail the era's interior furnishings and document the social, cultural, and aesthetic development of European domestic life. The collection includes examples of English, German, Russian, Swiss, and Austrian domestic spaces. Selected objects from the museum's permanent collection complement the drawings.
New: Campana Brothers Select: Works from the Permanent Collection
February 15, 2008 - August 24, 2008
As the fifth guest curators in the exhibition series, the Brazilian brothers Fernando and Huberto Campana produce an installation of selected works from the museum's collection. The selected pieces -- which range from book illustrations and jewelry, to furniture and wallpaper designs -- blend unexpected media, layer varied forms, and weave intricate patterns and lines. The brothers' new piece of furniture commissioned by the museum is also on view.
