The ocean is ancient, essential to all life, constantly changing, and just beginning to be explored. To celebrate the opening of the Natural History Museum's new Sant Ocean Hall, this lecture series features curators discussing various aspects of the ocean. Today, anthropologist Stephen Loring offers insight into the deep and abiding relationship between the indigenous peoples of the North Pacific and ocean resources.

Couldn't we all use some good advice about managing the many digital images we collect? Having a good system is critically important to conservators who use digital images to document treatments. Paper conservator Dawn Heller (supplemental faculty member, Winterthur/University of Delaware) discusses options for image management and archiving digital image files, and shares practical suggestions for what to do when you don't have your own IT support staff on call. Though this program is directed toward professional conservators, anyone curious about the conservation process is welcome.

Surrealism was born out of the chaos of World War I, when, on average, some 2,200 French and Germans were being killed each day between August 1914 and November 1918. This evening, art critic Judy Pomeranz gives an insightful look at this world turned upside down and explains the meaning behind the works of such artists as Dali, Magritte, Miro, and Tanguy.
