Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Family Day Celebration |

Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum. Activities include workshops on origami, letter writing, stamp designing, and storybook making; presentations by origami artist Marcia Mau, artist Sushmita Mazumdar, storyteller Kathy Mathieson, and children's book author and stamp illustrator Kam Mak; performances by Hawaiian group Halau O Na Hali'a, South Asian "fusion dance team" Chamak, and the Northern Virginia Rondalla, a string orchestra that plays traditional Filipino folk music. Children's books with Asian American themes are available for purchase. Cosponsors: National Postal Museum, Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Heritage Committee, Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program, Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies, and Smithsonian Heritage Months Steering Committee.

Film historian Max Alvarez examines the complex artistic relationships of several famous actor-director duos. This afternoon, he discusses the works of internationally acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, who has created films with actress Gong Li for 20 years. This pair has gained recognition for films such as Red Sorghum, Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern, The Story of Qiu Ju, and Curse of the Golden Flower.

(for ages 13-18) In this intensive 5-week program, aspiring young artists have an opportunity to interact with peers, artists, and curators, and respond to objects from the collection. Students from local schools, grades 9-12, may apply. No previous art experience is necessary, and all materials are provided by the Hirshhorn.
